Studie en annotaties 1896 - 1897

This is a page of "Studie en annotaties", or studies and annotations, by George Hendrik Breitner, housed here in the Rijksmuseum. The sketch is made on a lined page in pencil, and dominated by a quadrilateral form. Note how this shape lacks complete closure, and its lines, far from being uniform, waver with a human touch. Breitner's sketch exemplifies how the formal elements of line and shape can convey a wealth of information. The open form invites the surrounding space of the page to become part of the composition. The lines suggest a structure, perhaps architectural, with vertical divisions implying a sequence of panels or openings. The annotations scrawled below serve not as mere descriptions but as integral parts of the visual field, their linguistic meaning secondary to their graphic presence.
