Joseph Leboit made this drawing of a sugar bowl with graphite on paper, and what strikes me is how alive the object feels, even though it’s just a drawing. Leboit coaxes out the curves of the sugar bowl with short, almost frantic marks, like he's trying to capture its essence before it disappears. The surface buzzes with energy; the graphite is thick in some areas, creating shadows, and thin in others, allowing the paper to breathe through. It’s a delicate balance, a dance between the object and the artist’s hand. Look closely at the way the light catches the rim, how those tiny strokes create a sense of depth. It reminds me of Morandi and his still-life paintings, where everyday objects become monumental through sheer attention and care. There's a tenderness to the whole thing, an invitation to slow down and appreciate the quiet beauty of the everyday. After all, isn't that what art is all about?
