Philips Galle made this print, “Landschap met Elisa, die de mantel van Elia ontvangt,” using the intaglio process of engraving. Engraving is a skilled process that involves using a tool called a burin to carve lines directly into a metal plate, usually copper. The plate is then inked, and the surface wiped clean, leaving ink only in the engraved lines. When pressed against paper, the ink transfers, creating a precise and detailed image. The striking clarity and fineness of line seen in this print are characteristic of engraving, allowing for intricate details and tonal variations. Galle has used these capabilities to create a rich landscape filled with architectural ruins and dramatic skies. The method of production mirrors the themes in the artwork. The labor-intensive engraving mirrors the transformative biblical narrative, asking us to consider the work involved in acts of devotion and creation.
