Michiel Elgersma created this landscape with a shepherd using etching, probably in the early 18th century in the Netherlands. The image presents a tranquil scene: figures lounge in a verdant landscape, evoking a sense of pastoral harmony. But, consider the historical context: the Dutch Golden Age saw the rise of a wealthy merchant class who desired to display their affluence and good taste. Landscapes, like this one, became fashionable as symbols of cultivated leisure. This image draws upon the artistic conventions established through the academy. The inclusion of classical architectural fragments adds an air of sophistication, aligning the Dutch landscape tradition with the grandeur of the classical world. While appearing to celebrate nature, it also subtly reinforces the social hierarchy of the time. To fully understand this print, we might turn to period writings on art theory or consult estate inventories to see how such images were displayed and valued in Dutch homes. Art is never created in a vacuum and my role as an art historian is to uncover its complex web of social and institutional connections.
