This print, *Gezegende leven van de luiaard Lipotopo*, was made by Niccolo Nelli, though we don't know exactly when. It's an etching, meaning the image was incised into a metal plate, probably copper, then inked and printed onto paper. The etched line is really the star here. Nelli skillfully uses hatching, or closely spaced parallel lines, to create tone and shadow. Look closely, and you’ll see how the density and direction of the lines give form to the figures and landscape. The image itself is a fascinating social commentary. It depicts the supposed "blessed life" of Lipotopo the lazy man. We see him and his family indulging in various forms of idleness. Of course, this is a satirical take on the value of labor. In early modern Europe, a strong work ethic was increasingly seen as a virtue, especially for the emerging merchant class. This print, with its detailed rendering of indolence, serves as a moralistic warning against sloth. Ultimately, Nelli's print shows how even a seemingly simple work on paper can reveal complex social attitudes toward labor, class, and consumption.
