This is a photograph of a sculptural group depicting a scene from the Italian commedia dell'arte made by Lemercier & Cie. Observe the Harlequin figure scaling the crumbling wall, a theatrical gesture echoing the yearning for freedom. It evokes ancient depictions of the ladder of life. Beneath him, the swaggering Capitano, a parody of the military man, represents vanity. This figure reminds me of the miles gloriosus of Roman comedy and the Renaissance depictions of the vice of vainglory. The Capitano's arrogant stance is a mask concealing underlying insecurity, revealing our complex relationship with power and authority. These stock characters, or maschere, tap into a shared cultural memory, revealing universal truths about human nature through humor and exaggeration. It has resurfaced, evolved, and taken on new meanings in different historical contexts.
