Curator: Immediately, it evokes a sense of warmth, like a memory half-remembered, all those soft edges. Editor: This is indeed Sir Joshua Reynolds' "Sketch for ‘The 4th Duke of Marlborough and his Family’," currently residing in the Tate Collections. Curator: "Sketch" is the operative word! It feels so fleeting, capturing a moment in the lives of these rather important people. You can almost feel the air moving around them. Editor: Reynolds was quite clever in how he portrayed aristocratic families. It's a performance of power, staged within a picturesque setting. Notice how the architectural backdrop is simultaneously grand and slightly crumbling. Curator: And the dog! Don't forget the dog. It feels so alive, amidst all the powdered wigs and posed stances. I wonder, did Reynolds add it as a touch of genuine, unscripted life? Editor: Perhaps. He certainly understood the power of contrast, how to subtly humanize those in positions of authority, making them relatable, even to us. Curator: I like that idea, the performance of power. Maybe all of us are just sketches in someone else's grand portrait. Editor: A humbling thought. Perhaps a reminder that even dukes and duchesses are just fleeting impressions in the grand scheme of history.

Reynolds rarely made preliminary sketches even for complex compositions. But the magnificent group of the family of the Duke of Marlborough, which still dominates the Red Drawing Room at Blenheim Palace, was clearly an exception. Conceived in the grandest traditions of Rubens and Van Dyck, it was to influence society portraiture into this century. This sketch shows the painter struggling with the problem of integrating the solemn splendour of the adults with a more modern, relaxed informality preferred for young children and dogs. The end result shows brilliantly the range of Reynolds's wit and originality as a portraitist. Gallery label, September 2004
