Robert Frank made this gelatin silver print, "Bank interior—Chicago," capturing a scene that is both familiar and distant. Frank, a Swiss immigrant, traveled across America, and he saw a country grappling with its identity amidst the promises of prosperity. Here, we observe a man absorbed in his task at a writing stand, set against the backdrop of classical architecture—pillars that speak to stability and tradition. The teller to the left is separated from the viewer behind a barred window. These elements invite us to consider the themes of access and exclusion. What does it mean to have a place in this economy? Whose labor and whose stories are valued and made visible? Frank said he wanted to show "what America is like." The photograph captures a moment of quiet unease, reflecting the tensions within the American narrative of success and belonging. It gently compels us to reflect on the everyday negotiations of identity and value in the structures we inhabit.
