This engraving, "Wellust verleidt een jonge man," was created by Jan Punt in the 18th century. It’s made with a technique of cutting lines into a metal plate, inking the surface, and then using a press to transfer that image onto paper. The density of those etched lines gives the print its texture and tone, and allows for a high level of detail. Look closely at the way Punt uses this intensive, repetitive labor to render human figures, landscapes, and even emotions. There's a real contrast between the skilled handwork involved in creating the plate, and the mass-produced copies that would have circulated widely. The image itself is of a young man being tempted by worldly pleasures. The material quality of the print, however, makes this an experience you can see and feel. It asks us to consider the work, skill, and intention involved in its creation and to question the distinction between art and craft.
