Bramine Hubrecht made this pencil drawing of a cowshed at an unknown date. Hubrecht was part of a generation of Dutch women artists who found professional success in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Hubrecht's choice of subject matter is interesting. Images of rural labor were very popular in the Netherlands at this time, but they were usually presented in the form of finished paintings for an urban art market. The sketch gives us a sense of how the artist's social position allowed her access to this private, working space. We might want to do further research into the institutions that promoted women's art at this time, as well as the changing social status of agricultural workers in the Netherlands. The meaning of this drawing is tied to this complex web of social and institutional histories.
