Arnold Peter Weisz-Kubínčan made this drawing called 'Family,' sometime before 1944 with ink on paper. Just look at the way the ink sort of pools and bleeds, creating depth and shadow with the minimum of fuss. It's all about process, this work. He's not trying to trick you into thinking this is a realistic scene. Instead, it feels like he's exploring the relationships between the figures - the man, woman and horse - through the act of drawing. The marks are so immediate. See how the looping marks on the horse mimic the apples in the tree. There's a real sense of energy in the way he's built up the image. It reminds me a little of some of the early 20th century expressionists, like Kirchner, who were also interested in capturing raw emotion through simplified forms. Ultimately, this is a drawing about feeling. Not about what things look like, but what they feel like.
