This small photograph shows a view of Wijnhaven in Dordrecht, and although we don't know exactly when G. Hidderley made this work, you can feel that the scene is rendered with a very careful approach, and the tonal range is delicate and subtle. There's a beautiful stillness to the image, like time held its breath for a moment! The water is smooth and reflective. It's very calming to look at, you could almost step right into it. The surface is smooth and creamy, like sepia-toned silk! The buildings have a lovely textured quality, with some detail to pick out in their architectural styles. In the way the light hits the buildings, you can just feel the hand of the artist there. The tonal range is very interesting. Some areas are almost grey while others are almost black. It gives the piece a real sense of depth. In the way, Hidderley balances light and dark he reminds me of Edward Hopper, another artist who was interested in urban scenes!
