This is a vintage photograph of a festive gathering of Dutch and Surinamese people by an anonymous artist. The image is of a crowd of people gathered beneath a wooden structure. To the left, people are sitting, smartly dressed. In the centre stand two figures, one in a white shirt with a dark tie and the other in a dark suit. To the right are a group of children in uniform. It's a black and white photo, so there's a tonal range from light to dark, but what I'm most curious about is the occasion. What's the mood, what are they celebrating? I wonder what it was like to be the photographer, capturing this scene? What were they thinking as they pressed the shutter? It's like they're saying, "Here, look at this moment, and remember it." And now, all these years later, we are. It makes you think about how we are always in conversation with one another, capturing images, remembering events, and sharing them across time. Even though this moment is in the past, its memory lives on.
