This repurposed 1928 coin, framed by C. de Draaijer, makes you consider the currency of beauty itself. What was once a coin, a means of exchange, is now framed by delicate roses, elevated to a decorative object. Look closely, and you’ll see the craftsmanship in the roses. Each one is perfectly rendered, adding a layer of texture that contrasts with the smooth surface of the coin. And the way the roses encircle Wilhelmina’s profile is like a little garden of adornment, drawing our eye to her stoic expression. I like how the luster of the metal reflects the light, as it's almost as if the coin and the roses are whispering secrets to each other across time. You can almost feel the hands that shaped the metal into these blooms, turning something ordinary into something precious. It reminds me a bit of Duchamp's readymades, but with a softer touch. It's a sweet consideration of value, worth, and the stories we choose to tell.
