Yoshikawa Kanpo made this woodblock print called "Cherry Blossoms at Night in Maruyama Park", and the gradations of color in the sky and the blossom show a real mastery of the technique. The black ink used for the crowd makes such a satisfying contrast with the glowing cherry blossom. You can almost feel the temperature change from warm to cool between the tree and the sky. Notice how the pink seems to be more than just pink – there is a real sense of the light reflecting on the petals. It's like the color is alive. It reminds me of those blurry, soft-focus photos of cherry blossoms you see, where it's not really about the detail but more about the feeling. Look how the artist balances abstraction and representation so beautifully! The work is reminiscent of Hiroshige's prints, but perhaps with an even more decorative sensibility. It reminds us that art is an endless conversation across generations and cultures.
