This print, made by the heirs of widow Cornelis Stichter, presents a series of military figures for the amusement of children. The text accompanying the images suggests a playful rather than martial tone. Made in the Netherlands, the print’s seemingly lighthearted portrayal of military life comes from a distinctive time in Dutch history. Following independence from Spain, the Dutch Republic experienced a period of economic and cultural flourishing known as the Golden Age. This newfound prosperity led to the growth of a powerful merchant class, the development of innovative artistic styles, and, as we see here, the expansion of print culture. As a social historian, I would want to learn more about the cultural associations of military service in the Dutch Golden Age. Did Dutch citizens think of military service as a glorious undertaking or more as a necessary evil? Studying sources such as military records, personal letters, and other examples of popular culture will help us better understand the message conveyed by this print.
