Here's a neon piece with an electric blue glow spelling out a name, a series of letters, by Bruce Nauman. It flickers and hums, and its creation must have been an act of bending light and meaning into one. I think Nauman might have been thinking about the elusiveness of identity when he made it. The way a name can feel both completely solid and totally up for grabs. It’s like, what even IS a name, anyway? Just a bunch of sounds, right? But somehow, those sounds stick to us, become us. There’s something so immediate about the neon, the way it blazes into the room. The light just kind of bounces off everything around it. It makes me think of other artists who have used language in their work, like Ed Ruscha or Jenny Holzer. They're all playing with this idea of communication, but in such different ways. And aren't we all just constantly riffing off each other, taking ideas and twisting them into something new? It's a conversation that never ends, and that's what makes art so alive, so vibrant. It's not about having all the answers, but about asking the right questions.
