This small painting, simply titled Head, was made by Pablo Picasso in France using oil on canvas. As a young artist, Picasso quickly moved through the conventional styles offered by art schools and museums. Here, you can see him grappling with representing three dimensions on a flat surface, which was the central problem for the Cubist movement he pioneered along with Georges Braque. Notice how Picasso broke down the planes of the face into geometric shapes, almost like facets of a gem. This technique allowed him to show multiple perspectives simultaneously, challenging the traditional idea of a fixed viewpoint. Historical documents and letters reveal how Picasso and Braque pushed each other, engaging in a visual dialogue that questioned the very nature of representation. What started as a visual experiment soon became a powerful way to reflect the fragmentation and complexity of modern life. It challenged the established norms of the art world and opened up new possibilities for artistic expression.
