Robert Frank captured these frames on a sheet of Kodak safety film. It's a simple, readily available material, but one that allowed him to crystallize fleeting moments. Look closely. The images are arranged in strips, revealing the process of selection and sequencing that's so crucial to photography. The black and white film amplifies the starkness and grain, lending a raw, immediate feel. The high contrast and deep shadows create a sense of mystery, yet also, a sense of everyday truth. The social context here is essential: Frank documented slices of life, offering candid glimpses into the human condition. This work, like much of his output, pushes against traditional boundaries of art, elevating the mundane to the level of art. This is less about the photograph as precious object, more about what it can tell us.
