About this artwork

This porcelain dish was produced in Vienna by the Du Paquier Porcelain Manufactory sometime between 1718 and 1744. Porcelain's arrival in Europe coincided with burgeoning trade routes that moved not only objects but also cultural ideas, which shaped the perception of luxury. This piece is inspired by the visual language of Kakiemon porcelain from Japan, prized by European elites. But here, the interpretation shifts. The vibrant palette is grounded with darker blues, disrupting the seamless, light aesthetic typically associated with Kakiemon. What does it mean to borrow from a tradition, to adapt it, and in doing so, to subtly alter its emotional register? This dish reflects a complex relationship between cultural reverence and creative independence. It is a reminder that cultural exchange is rarely a simple transaction but a layered dialogue across time and place.
