Richard Artschwager made this artwork, titled Location, using simple materials: wood and paint. The artist created several of these ‘location’ markers; the first ones were made from solid wood, but later became Formica-covered. These minimalist forms seem to hover on the wall, but they are actually fixed in place. Artschwager was interested in the way that objects could occupy a space and draw attention to their surroundings. Think of them as visual punctuation marks, highlighting points in a room. What's fascinating is that Artschwager blurs the lines between furniture, sculpture, and architecture. His art isn't confined to the pedestal or the wall; it merges with the everyday environment, asking us to reconsider how we perceive the spaces we inhabit. By focusing on the ways of making, and the means of production in which objects and artworks are created, Artschwager challenges traditional distinctions between high art and craft.
