This sheet with a flower and diamond pattern was made by an anonymous artist. Without a known artist, this work presents some challenges to the art historian. We can consider its relation to contemporary design movements or the ways in which the motif interacts with the social and cultural landscape of its time. What was the intended use of the design, and what types of production or aesthetic movements might it reflect? Was it destined for the private sphere, or would its function have been more public? When thinking about its social and institutional context, we might ask how this particular design gained traction. Did the pattern originate from the textile industry? Was it disseminated via a design journal or a pattern book? These are the kinds of questions that we, as historians, must ask in order to understand the work within its full social and institutional context.
