Editor: This is Jean Louis de Marne's "Studies of Goats' Heads and Legs." What strikes me is the delicate rendering of these creatures. It feels like he was trying to capture their individual personalities. What do you think, what am I missing? Curator: It's like eavesdropping on the artist's sketchbook! De Marne uses line work to convey form, and to also suggest movement. Do you notice the varying levels of finish? Some are quick sketches, while others are more detailed, exploring texture. Editor: It's true, some of the goats look as though they were captured mid-bleat! I guess it’s a study, so the artist is feeling his way through it. Curator: Exactly! It’s a glimpse into the artistic process, which is a rather privileged position. Editor: This reminds me that even accomplished artists need to practice and experiment. Thanks!
