Curator: A somewhat dense vertical composition, wouldn’t you say? Editor: Indeed! At the Rijksmuseum, we see "Strook met dolfijnen en festoen," a print created by Jacques Vauquer around 1650 to 1670. A delicate engraving full of detail! My initial impression is of organized chaos—an intense and intricate arrangement. Curator: Organized chaos perfectly encapsulates the Baroque aesthetic, doesn't it? I'm particularly drawn to how Vauquer uses the dolphin motif here. In the 17th century, dolphins symbolized speed, diligence, and love, all desirable virtues for the growing merchant class. Editor: Observe the materiality, though! The linear quality dominates the image; this repetitive line-making underscores the graphic nature of the work itself. The details build up forms to make out dolphins and garlands. Curator: And yet those lines do more than define forms. They are also cultural conveyors! Garlands were common in both Roman and Dutch art to commemorate important events, infusing a sense of heritage and connection to the past into daily life. To me it also resembles ocean waves—do you see it? Editor: I can follow that reasoning. However, while the details denote marine life, it is worth mentioning the lack of depth in the picture—a certain flattening of space—almost giving a textile feeling to this engraving, a kind of two-dimensionality which would work well with any support. Curator: A fascinating point. I would say that such simplification serves the symbolic function. Dolphins aren't presented as literal creatures but as abstract symbols woven into the broader narrative. These animals and flowery ornaments almost talk to us. Editor: The Baroque loves to deliver a message with every ornament! The high and low contrast further contributes to an assertive composition, easy to reproduce and adapt for further usage. Curator: Precisely. Perhaps as decoration for luxury items or to emphasize specific concepts. Seeing how skillfully Jacques Vauquer incorporates established symbolic meanings truly fascinates me. Editor: And by understanding the forms and materiality—the medium itself, we find how this aesthetic framework influenced graphic representation through repetitive marks! It allows for a rich appreciation of both meaning and the structure in this refined and energetic work.
