This side chair was crafted by R.J. Horner and Company sometime between 1886 and 1915, using stained maple and cane. Although it looks like bamboo, the chair is actually made from maple, carefully turned and stained to mimic the exotic plant. Take a closer look at the seat: the woven cane provides a comfortable, breathable surface, while the simulated bamboo frame adds a touch of visual flair. The choice of materials and techniques speaks volumes about the social context in which the chair was made. During the late 19th century, there was a growing fascination with Asian cultures, and designers often incorporated elements inspired by the East into their work. By using relatively inexpensive materials like maple and cane, Horner and Company made this exotic style accessible to a wider audience. This chair reminds us that design is not just about aesthetics; it's also about material choices, production methods, and the cultural values they represent.
