Here is an aperitif glass with no known date made by an anonymous artist. Look at this little glass! What was it like to make this? I imagine the maker, holding that molten blob of glass, coaxing it into form, twirling and blowing and shaping it. What were they thinking as they formed the stem, so delicate and thin, and how did they get that swirl of gold in the middle? It's like they’re having a conversation with the glass itself, responding to its properties, its heat, its fragility. There's a sense of play in the gesture, an improvisation with the material. Artists and makers often work this way, and I think of other artists I know, all trying to work like this. It’s a reminder that art is about dialogue, about call and response across time.
