Untitled (adults and children eating in living room) c. 1950
Dimensions 10.16 x 12.7 cm (4 x 5 in.)
Curator: I find it so interesting that this work by Lucian and Mary Brown, shows adults and children eating, but what are they eating? That is, is this quotidian or a special occasion? There's something about the intimate, almost voyeuristic, quality of the photograph that pulls me in. Editor: I was struck by the informality of this black and white photograph, and how the composition focuses on this moment of sharing a meal. What do you see in this piece? Curator: It feels like a stolen glance, a moment captured on the fly. The inverted colors almost cast a haunting feeling. The setting, in what seems like a well-appointed living room, juxtaposes the normalcy of eating with the slightly surreal atmosphere. Almost like we are ghosts looking into a moment in time. What do you think? Editor: I hadn't considered the ghostly feel, but I completely agree. It makes me wonder about the story behind the image. Curator: Exactly. It is like the artists are trying to remember a shared moment in time.
