Raoul Varin made this print of the corner of Lake and La Salle Streets in Chicago, depicting the Marine Bank Building in 1864. The way the image is built up from hatched marks feels very considered, like each individual line is placed to slowly coax the image into being. It’s a reminder that image-making is a process of accumulation, not just a snapshot. The textures and details are incredible. Look at the way he renders the stone facades and the bustling street scene. I love how the crisp geometry of the buildings contrasts with the organic forms of the horses and carriages. Notice the small figures populating the scene. Each one is so carefully delineated. It creates a sense of depth and liveliness. The sky with its faded, indeterminate blue feels like it's been washed with a watery brush. Varin’s work reminds me of Canaletto, the Venetian painter known for his detailed cityscapes. Both artists share a similar interest in capturing the atmosphere and detail of urban life. Art is always about a conversation across time.
