This is a small lithograph card titled "Finland, 50 Pennia" from the series "Coins of All Nations," created around 1890 by W. Duke, Sons & Co. At a time when the global marketplace was expanding, and advertising intertwining with cultural representation, this card exoticizes Finland through caricature. The figure, presumably meant to represent a Finn, is laden with markers of otherness: exaggerated features and traditional dress. Note the juxtaposition of the figure with the coin, fixing a sense of value both economically and culturally. These images served to familiarize consumers with foreign lands, but also perpetuated stereotypes. The emotional impact of such images is complex, evoking both curiosity and a reinforcement of cultural hierarchies. Here, Finland is not just a place, but a commodity, packaged and sold alongside cigarettes, reflecting a broader dynamic of imperial consumption and representation.
