This anonymous photo album of the Palthe family from Almelo, whenever it was made, shows us that process isn't just for paintings! The olive green of the cover feels so specific and the texture is so present. If you look close, you can see the tiny, tiny threads of the fabric. It’s not trying to be anything other than what it is: an album. The faded red spine grounds it, and the worn corners really speak to the object’s history. You can imagine the hands that have held it, carefully turning the pages, adding to the story inside. You know, thinking about the grid-like nature of the fabric makes me think of Agnes Martin, who wasn't afraid to find vast meaning in simple things.
