This photo album from the Palthe family in Almelo, now at the Rijksmuseum, looks as if it was made with great care. Just imagine the person who bound it and the care they took, carefully covering the boards with a green material. It's an understated piece of art, isn't it? It makes me think about the anonymous makers of so many things. What were they thinking as they carefully constructed the album, probably without any recognition? It may be seen as craft, but what is painting other than a craft? It is the skillful application of material that brings about emotion, or meaning, or both. I find the olive-green and brown hues comforting. The colours feel modest, like a worn canvas. I think of the artist Giorgio Morandi when I look at this album; he also explored quiet, introspective art making, which also speaks volumes. So, to the anonymous binder of this family album: thanks for your labor, your love, and the long shadow of connection you cast!
