This engraving, "Last Supper," was created by Daniel Nikolaus Chodowiecki. Here, we observe a somber gathering, dominated by the table, a Eucharistic symbol laden with bread and wine. This potent iconography evokes both spiritual nourishment and sacrifice. Note the downcast eyes and the slight distancing between the figures, which adds to the emotional tension of the scene. Consider, for instance, how the motif of the shared meal extends back to ancient sacrificial rites. Recall, too, images of gatherings from Pompeii, where the symposium was equally a ritual. The communal meal is an ancient expression of bonding, yet here, in this moment of betrayal and impending doom, it is fraught with psychological weight.
