Józef Pankiewicz painted this portrait of his wife in shades of green and pink; it’s all soft and hazy like a memory. I love the way the green sweater seems to hug her. You can imagine him mixing that colour, getting it just right, that certain glow he wants to capture. It’s thick, almost sculptural, like the paint wants to be touched. It gives you a real sense of what it was like for him to be in the studio, doesn't it? And look at her hands, loosely clasped. There’s a stillness, a quietude. Maybe he asked her to sit for hours. Maybe it’s a silent conversation, a portrait of love and companionship, all in these blurred lines and muted tones. Painters are always talking to each other, across time, influencing each other. It's like a dance of color and form. Every brushstroke is a question, a statement, an echo of what came before, and a whisper of what’s to come.
