Airmail 

Stanley Artgerm Lau created this digital artwork titled “Airmail” in the 20th century. This artwork reimagines Kiki, the protagonist from Studio Ghibli’s animated film “Kiki’s Delivery Service,” originally released in 1989. The film portrays Kiki's journey of self-discovery as she leaves home at thirteen to start her own witch delivery service. She encounters challenges linked to her identity and independence. Lau’s artwork builds on this narrative, emphasizing the emotional resonance of Kiki's story. The reimagining of Kiki as a young woman updates the character for contemporary audiences while keeping the essence of the source material. The image captures Kiki in a moment of serene flight, a seagull mirroring her trajectory, with Jiji her cat perched on her shoulder, all key figures in her journey. Lau’s “Airmail” thus, extends the original film's themes of growth and self-reliance, echoing the complex relationship between independence and identity.
