Al Held's "The Big N" is a painting, pure and simple. No fancy materials here, just acrylic on canvas. Yet, don't let its minimalist appearance fool you. Held was deeply engaged with the legacy of abstract expressionism, and the ways in which it could be pushed to its logical conclusion. Just think about the scale of this work. It's an all-over composition, meaning that the painted elements extend to the very edge of the canvas, commanding your attention. The paint is applied flatly, almost mechanically, denying any trace of the artist's hand. The color palette is restrained, mostly white, with just a hint of yellow and black. But the way these colors interact creates a sense of depth and tension, making you question the very nature of perception. This isn't craft in the traditional sense, but it's a powerful demonstration of how industrial materials can be used to create art that is both intellectually stimulating and visually arresting. Held challenges the conventional boundaries of art, inviting us to see the world in new and unexpected ways.
