Leo Dee made this drawing of Pamet Hill, Truro, using graphite on paper. Dee's mark-making feels provisional, like he’s feeling his way through the landscape. To me, it demonstrates an understanding of artmaking as a process. The drawing has a light, airy quality, achieved through the delicate application of graphite. The texture of the paper is visible, adding a subtle layer of depth to the composition. Look closely at the cluster of trees. Notice how Dee uses a combination of short, broken lines and smudging to create the illusion of foliage. It’s almost as if he’s capturing the essence of the trees rather than rendering them in meticulous detail. This approach reminds me of Agnes Martin, who was interested in conveying a sense of lightness and tranquility through her work. Like Martin, Dee embraces ambiguity and invites us to bring our own interpretations to the piece.
