Johann August Corvinus captured this view of the Kollegiatstift Haug in Würzburg in an engraving. The cross, atop the church's towers and dome, serves as the dominant symbol, deeply rooted in Christian iconography and the promise of salvation. Now, consider the cross's journey through time. From its origins as a symbol of sacrifice, it has evolved into a powerful emblem of faith, hope, and redemption. Yet, across cultures, the image of the cross appears in many forms, long pre-dating Christianity itself. Even the ancient ankh, held by Egyptian gods, echoes in its shape a similar desire for immortality, a testament to our collective yearning for something beyond mortal existence. The verticality of the towers, and the upward surge of the dome, evoke an emotional response, an ascent towards the divine. The image thus engages us on a subconscious level, tapping into our shared aspirations for spiritual transcendence.
