Jacob Houbraken's "Galeischip redt schipbreukelingen" (1708-1780) is a detailed etching depicting a dramatic scene of a ship rescuing survivors of a shipwreck. The scene takes place at night under a starry sky, with a large galley boat rescuing numerous people from the water. Houbraken masterfully captures the chaotic energy and desperation of the situation, highlighting the heroic efforts of the rescuers and the vulnerability of the survivors. The etching is held in the Rijksmuseum and measures 152mm in height and 189mm in width. Houbraken was a renowned Dutch engraver, whose work focused on historical events, portraits, and mythological scenes, often drawing from existing paintings and illustrations.
