Curatorial notes
Cornelis Springer etched this view of a church portal, capturing a scene imbued with symbols of faith and community. Above the entrance, a relief depicts a Madonna and Child, a motif echoing ancient images of maternal divinity. The act of bestowing wisdom, a familiar image found in various cultural traditions, from ancient Egyptian depictions of Isis and Horus to Byzantine icons of the Theotokos. The presence of the Madonna and Child above a church portal creates an emotional link to the church, and calls to mind a sense of protection, compassion, and the sanctity of new life. This reflects a collective memory of hope, spiritual solace and the continuous cycle of birth, death, and rebirth. The portal acts as a physical threshold and a symbolic passage—linking the earthly and the divine. It represents the intersection of the temporal and the eternal, and signifies an invitation to enter a sacred space. This motif—the doorway as a transformative passage—reappears throughout history, evolving in form but retaining its essential meaning.
