This is Alfred Stieglitz's photograph, *Songs of the Sky P2*. The composition is mostly sky, a mass of swirling clouds. A dark tree rises up from the bottom. I wonder what it was like for Stieglitz to stand there, looking up, waiting for the right moment to capture this scene. Making a photograph is so immediate, but it's also about anticipation and patience. The light is everything, and the way it defines the edges of the clouds gives them a kind of puffy, three-dimensional quality. I think about other artists who have tried to capture the sky: Constable, Turner, and so many more. There's something about the sky that just keeps pulling us in, inviting us to project our feelings and ideas onto its vastness. It's like the ultimate abstract painting, always changing, never quite the same. These artists are constantly responding to and building upon each other’s work, creating an ongoing conversation across time. It's a reminder that art is never truly finished but always evolving.
