Curatorial notes
Lorenzo Lorenzi created this ornamental letter V in pen and black ink, sometime between 1750 and 1780. During this time, the Rococo style dominated Europe, embracing ornamentation and elaborate detail. But what stories do these embellishments tell us? The letter is brought to life by the figure of a nymph and two birds in flight, set against a backdrop of swirling foliage. In this period, such idealized figures often symbolized beauty and freedom, yet they also came with the weight of societal expectations and gender roles. The nymph, seemingly caught in a moment of self-adornment, invites us to consider the performative aspects of femininity. Do you see her as empowered, or as an object of the viewer's gaze? This is a question that continues to resonate today, as we navigate the complex intersections of gender, representation, and identity.
