Léon Davent created this engraving, "Olympische goden bewonderen het nieuwe sterrenbeeld", circa 1540-1556. Immediately, your eye is drawn to the Olympian gods arranged across a cloud bank that dominates the upper third of the scene. The contrast between the defined figures and the soft clouds creates a sense of dynamism. Davent uses line and form to establish a hierarchy and to tell a story. Notice how the radiating lines emanating from the sun draw your eye to the gods, but also serve to visually connect the celestial and terrestrial realms. The landscape below, meticulously etched, provides a stage for the divine drama unfolding above. Davent seems to suggest a harmonious interplay between the cosmos and the earthly. But the linear perspective employed is not quite right and destabilises any clear reading. This misalignment may reflect the changing philosophical landscape of the Renaissance as old world views are challenged. The artwork doesn't present fixed meanings, but an ongoing dialogue between classical myth and emerging scientific thought.
