Mathieu Lauweriks made this pencil sketch for a jewelry box, we don't know when or where, but isn't it cool to catch an artist at the beginning of the making process, when a jewel box only exists as an idea! I love that the paper feels like a laboratory where Lauweriks experiments with different shapes and geometries. It's all about the bones of things, isn't it? Circles and lines construct these potential forms. It's a very different approach to art making, one based on precision and planning. Notice how each sketch is so tentative, as if searching for the perfect form. The multiple marks around the circle on the bottom left suggest a process of trial and error, finding the right curve. I am drawn to the detail at the top left – I want to see this realized in real life! It reminds me of Hilma af Klint's diagrams, with their blend of art and geometry. Art is always talking to art through time, right? It’s all one big conversation.
