This drawing of the Presentation of the Virgin in the Temple and Abraham about to Sacrifice Isaac was made by Perino del Vaga using pen and brown ink with brown wash, heightened with white gouache over black chalk. The rough texture of the paper support becomes part of the image; its subtle variations add to the sense of depth. The artist built the composition with an emphasis on linear perspective, and with great economy of means. There are very few strokes that don't contribute to the overall effect. Notice the monumentality he achieves in the two scenes with an impressive number of figures; their bodies are outlined with quick strokes. The drawing's aesthetic value lies in the efficient translation of the biblical narrative into visual form. It emphasizes the skills and sensibilities that allow him to handle the materials of art. Paying attention to the materials and techniques employed by the artist encourages us to challenge traditional notions of fine art and craft.
