Gerrit Willem Dijsselhof created this study of frame designs using graphite. Notice how each section presents a different way of treating the transition between surfaces. The ogee shape, an S-like curve found here, has its roots stretching back to ancient Greek architecture. Think of its appearance on the entablatures of temples and the like. This motif, born from structural necessity, evolved into a decorative element signifying sophistication. Later in the Gothic period, we see its pointed form in arches, expressing soaring spirituality. How fascinating it is that this simple curve can carry such weight! It’s as if the collective memory of past builders and artists is embedded within the form itself. The ogee, an echo across time, resonates in our subconscious.
