I wonder what Hundertwasser was thinking when he made this painting, 775 Park, with all these snaking lines and concentric circles in blues, greens and yellows. You can almost feel him leaning over the surface, improvising the composition as he went along. I imagine Hundertwasser was interested in the materiality of paint, and how different colors and textures can create visual rhythm. It is not hard to see him in his studio mixing paints to get just the right shade of green or blue. Look at the black lines as they move across the canvas like water flowing around stones. I see the influence of Klimt here, but also the Viennese Secession movement. For me, the painting feels intuitive and embodies his own unique vision of art, one that celebrates organic forms, bright colors, and a rejection of straight lines in favor of the natural world. It’s like Hundertwasser is inviting us to question how we see the world.
