Alfred Stieglitz made this photograph, Equivalent, date unknown, with a camera, of course. Just kidding! But, think about it, the camera is a kind of brush, isn’t it? It's not a painting, but for me, the grayscale tones and soft focus are what hits me first. The blurry edges are where the magic happens. It's all about atmosphere and feeling. This particular print has a moody quality. It’s like a Rothko, but with clouds! I can almost smell the rain and feel the wind. Look at how the light filters through the clouds. Stieglitz isn’t just documenting the sky; he is revealing something about the human condition. It's all about searching for meaning and beauty in everyday life. Looking at this, I think of Gerhard Richter's cloud paintings – both artists capture something elusive. Art is a never-ending conversation across time, isn't it?
