This photo, taken by Jan Lanting, shows an archeological site in Hungary. It makes me think about the process of discovery. What was Lanting thinking when he took this photo? Maybe something like, "What lies beneath? What can be revealed?" The surface is dotted with holes that could be post holes, or something else entirely. I can only begin to imagine the stories that lay beneath, artifacts and human remains offering glimpses into lives lived long ago. You can see the marks of digging on the slopes in the background. These form lines, like the kinds of marks that a painter might make with charcoal. This piece is a reminder that artists and archeologists are engaged in similar tasks – uncovering hidden layers of meaning.
