This Collar for neck of a chirpi, was made anonymously with thread on cloth and now resides at the Minneapolis Institute of Art. Look at how the maker repeated these tiny triangle shapes, pointing in different directions, it's almost like a dance. When I paint, the process is more important than the end result; it's about exploring the relationship between colors, lines, and textures. I imagine it must have been the same here. The red background is so vibrant against the muted tones of the natural fabric. The stitching is so even and precise; you can almost feel the rhythm of the needle moving through the cloth. The use of color and texture reminds me of the work of Faith Ringgold, who uses similar techniques to tell stories and explore cultural identity. Just like Ringgold, this piece embraces the beauty of imperfection and the power of human connection. It doesn’t need to say one thing, it can suggest a world.
