This print, ‘Orange,’ was made by Peter Doig, an artist who was born in Scotland, but who spent much of his childhood in Canada. Doig’s works frequently return to the landscapes of his youth, and, in particular, to the ski slopes where he spent much of his free time. As a result, the imagery in his works often recalls commercial ski posters, but also canonical landscape painters like Cezanne, or even the flat planes of a David Hockney swimming pool. Made in the late 20th and early 21st century, Doig's work speaks to the power of imagery in a global world. His use of flattened perspective and bold colors reminds us of the ubiquity of the image and the institutional frameworks through which we have come to understand our world, even, and perhaps especially, nature. To study his work is to study not only art history, but also the history of globalization and the environmental movement.
