This political cartoon, “Utrechtse maskerade van 1851: toelichting” was created by F.W. Boom, and is currently held at the Rijksmuseum. The cartoon offers a window into the political climate of the Netherlands during the mid-19th century. The figures skating on thin ice, labeled "Begrooting 1876," point to the fragility of the political budget. This imagery raises questions about economic stability. There are some elements of class and gender dynamics at play. Ice skating itself was becoming more popular across different social classes, yet access to political power remained limited. The act of advising the newcomer on how to navigate the ice could also reflect gendered expectations, with a more experienced (male) figure guiding the newcomer. The artist seems to invite us to consider who has the skills to succeed in the political arena, and who might be left behind on the ice.
